Kayaking starts from the village of Ban Soun Luoang, about an hour drive south of Luang Prabang. You will receive basic kayak instructions and practice with our experienced guides before heading down the Nam Khan River. We will kayak to the village of Ban Soun, a ‘khamu’ and ‘hmong’ village for a half hour visit before kayaking on to Tad Sae Waterfall. Its limestone cascades and florescent turquoise pools between the trees offer a stunning sight.
After a Lao-style picnic lunch and a swim at Tad Sae Waterfall, you continue paddling though beautiful landscape until reaching the tomb of 19th Century French explorer Henri Mouhut. The natural scientist was the first European to ‘rediscover’ Angkor Wat and to travel all the way up to Luang Prabang mainly by the Mekong River / the Nam Khong.
Finally, we continue to paddle to Khoua Mai (the New Bridge) where a pick-up awaits the group for transport back to Luang Prabang.
Remark: For those who prefer a gentle and easy river to be able to watch and relax, a trip on the Nam Khan River is the answer. Besides enjoying the views of rural life on the riverbanks, you stop at a few famed sites in the vicinity of Luang Prabang.
